Charger Stadium got to celebrate on November 15, as fourth-seeded Central High took care of business with ease in its Region 2B opening round playoff game against visiting Greensville County. The Chargers bolted out to a quick 21-0 lead, held a 42-0 half-time advantage and went on to win 49-14 over the fifth-seeded Eagles from Emporia.
This marked the first ever playoff encounter between the two programs in their 30 all-time meetings. Lunenburg improved to 7-3 overall on the season and is now 6-0 against the Eagles since 1975.
“I thought we played pretty well. It feels good to win one like this and I’ve been on the other side of this thing because last year we lost our first round game,” Lunenburg coach Will Thomas commented.
“We actually completed some passes. We also didn’t turn the ball over, which was really good. I’m hoping we’re not saving them for the next game. “Our defense also played really well and it was nice to force some three and outs.”
Breaking down the numbers for Central High
On the night, Central High racked up 402 total yards of offense on 29 plays from scrimmage, an average of 13.9 yards per play. That included sophomore QB Chad Mattox going a perfect 4 for 4 through the air with 91 yards and two touchdowns, one each to sophomore RB Jalin Freeman and senior RB Amarion Moore.
Freeman enjoyed a huge night with 218 yards rushing and 3 TD’s on seven carries, while Moore totaled 123 all-purpose yards on nine touches with a pair of scores.
“Amarion had a good all-around game. Jalin was outstanding with over 200 yards rushing and that was in all of basically two quarters because he didn’t play after the first series of the second half,” Thomas remarked.
A total of 23 different defenders made at least one tackle on the night as the Chargers were able to sub in a bevy of backups during the second half. Special teams got in on the act courtesy of blocked punts by juniors Zomari Oregel and Damarione Edmonds.
