John Howard Washburn, 70 of Kenbridge, went to be with the Lord on Dec. 9. He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman Fredrick Washburn and Lynda Black Washburn.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Patricia “Pat” Snead Washburn; his sisters, Margaret Allison (Richard) and Carol Frazeur (Dean); his brothers, Tom Washburn (Janet) and Mike Washburn (Rhonda, deceased); brother-in-law, Bill Gary (Eula, deceased); nephews, Larkin Allison (Amy), Thomas Wesley Washburn (Lauren), Andrew Washburn (Keyri) and Steve Gary (Michelle); nieces, Riley Allison and Susan Kreis (Tim); numerous great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
John was a proud “Hokie” graduating from Virginia Tech with a degree in forestry and wildlife. He was a past president of the Forestry Club at VA Tech and he loved VA Tech football. John was a consulting forester, real estate appraiser, and a USPS rural mail carrier out of the South Hill Post Office. He was a member of the Dundas Ruritan Club in which he held many positions in the local chapter, served as a past Zone Governor and was awarded the Tom Downing Fellow in appreciation of his unselfish personal efforts to the Ruritan Organization. He recently received his 45 year pin. He was a dedicated member of the National Wild Turkey Federation and president for 20 years of the South Hill Longbeards. John loved to hunt, fish and he was an avid reader. He enjoyed conversation with everyone, he never met a stranger.
He loved the Lord and was a Deacon at Kenbridge Christian Church, where services were held 2 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 15.
