Lunenburg County citizens with high mileage vehicles have an opportunity for reductions in passenger vehicle assessments. The county’s commissioner of revenue talked with The Dispatch this week, explaining how the program works.

As taxpayers know, personal property tax is levied each calendar year. By law, all motor vehicles, trailers, campers, mobiles homes, boats, and airplanes in the County or that are registered to a county address with the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles are subject to property tax.

A passenger vehicle assessment may be reduced if the vehicle has high mileage. The reduction is based on actual mileage as of January 1, 2025.

“None would disagree that high mileage on a vehicle reduces the value. The goal of our office is equitable and uniform assessments,” said Lunenburg County Commissioner of Revenue Liz Hamlett. “In adjusting for mileage, the assessed value of the property is more accurate, and I am executing the duties entrusted to me by my constituents.”

How does it work in Lunenburg?

High mileage reduction for applicable taxpayers is based on a sliding scale. Until the vehicle reaches over 250,000 miles, high mileage should be turned in annually, by March 1, to ensure the most accurate assessment for January 1 (Tax Day).

To apply for the reduction, a vehicle owner needs to submit the current vehicle mileage and a copy of the 2024 vehicle inspection or work order containing the date of service, mileage, and the VIN. An application for the high mileage reduction is available on the Lunenburg County website at lunenburgva.gov.

The requested information should be sent to cor@lunenburgva.gov or Commissioner of the Revenue, 11512 Courthouse Road, Lunenburg, VA, 23952, by March 1, 2025.

“As always, we are available and eager to answer any questions and explain the processes of local taxation” Hamlett told The Dispatch. “Our office hours are 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, or you can email cor@lunenburgva.gov.”
