Joe Marvin Bowman, 88 of Meherrin, entered his eternal rest Tuesday, Jan. 14. He was born in Lunenburg on April 24, 1936 to the late James H. Bowman and Elizabeth Smith Bowman.
Joe was preceded in death by his sister; Mary Ethel Bryant, brothers; Randolph, Cecil, Charlie and Clyde Bowman and a son, Anthony Tyree Bowman.
He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Marsha Anne Bowman; siblings, George (Betty), Riley (Belinda), Edward (Charlotte), Henry and Hazel (Bobby) Burley; children, Gloria Bowman Kuykendall and Mickey Bowman; stepchildren, John Hogan and Susan Hogan Borum; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews that he loved dearly, as well as many close friends.
Joe will be remembered as a man of character and integrity with a fun-loving personality. During his lifetime he was a service mechanic at Love’s Exxon in Green Bay, a carpenter for Sunrise Construction, a post office worker and landscaper at Longwood University in Farmville, an owner/operator of a BP station in Victoria, and an organic gardener “with the best Meherrin red tomatoes” from his home in Meherrin.
Joe served on the board at Ledbetter Christian Church, where he was a faithful member for many years.
Family will have visitation at Ledbetter Christian Church in Meherrin on Thursday, Jan. 23 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., with service to follow at 11:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Meherrin Volunteer Fire Department or the Meherrin SPCA in his honor.
