VDOT to close portions of Plank Road

Portions of Plank Road will be closed, starting on Monday, March 31. The change is taking place so that bridge repairs can happen. The segment of Plank Road, also known as Route 655, between Route 635 (Oral Oaks Road) and Route 643 (New Grove Road) will be the portion shut down. Officials from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) say they expect to have the repairs completed by early July.

As a result, starting on March 31, drivers should take one of two detours. For westbound traffic, head east to Route 635, then north to Route 643, then head south back onto Route 655. For eastbound traffic, head west to Route 643, then north to Route 653 and finally south to Route 655. Anyone with questions about the project can call VDOT’s customer service center at 800-FOR-ROAD (800-367-7623).

Lunenburg students make Dean’s List

Radford University released its Dean’s List for Fall 2024 earlier this week, including two Lunenburg students. Kenbridge residents Claire Bailey and Olivia Dunbar both earned the honor.

At Radford, students are placed on the Dean’s List if they meet four specific criteria. They must have 12 semester hours of coursework graded A-F; earn GPA’s of at least 3.4 for courses not graded on a pass-fail basis; obtain no grade lower than “C”; and receive no incomplete grades.

Law firm sponsors scholarship

The Warren Firm, a personal injury law firm based in Charlottesville, is offering a $2500 Hard Work Pays Off Scholarship to graduating high school seniors from the following Virginia counties: Appomattox, Charlotte, Lunenburg, Nottoway, Amelia, Cumberland, Buckingham, and Prince Edward. One winner will be selected.

Vaden Warren, attorney at the Warren Firm, grew up in Crewe. While Vaden’s career has led him 80 miles north to Charlottesville, he actively works with clients from all over Central and Southside Virginia and the area still holds a special place in his heart.

Vaden has recently finished a term as president of the Virginia Trial Lawyers’ Association, an organization that works to help shape laws in Virginia to be favorable to hardworking individuals.  He wanted to find a way to give back to students who work very hard, even if their school grades don’t necessarily place them at the top of their class or don’t reflect their efforts outside of academics.

The scholarship does not hinge on a student’s GPA, and a wide array of documents can stand in for the traditional resume, transcript, and essay in the application. School guidance counselors are able and strongly encouraged to nominate students who they believe should be considered for the scholarship. That includes applicants who plan to attend other kinds of post-high school educational programs beyond college, including trade school.

Applications are due by April 31, 2025, and further details can be found on The Warren Firm’s website at https://warren-law.com/hard-work-pays-off-scholarship-heart-of-virginia/.
