In order to operate a company in the Town of Kenbridge, you need a business license. In recent weeks, town staff have taken to gently reminding people of that fact over social media, as they keep encountering residents who say they didn’t know that was a requirement.

“Most issues are truly because people do not know that they should have a business license,” Kenbridge Town Manager Tony Matthews shared. “Once made aware of the requirement, they are eager to comply.”

Any business operating within the Town of Kenbridge, either storefront or mobile, must have a license to operate within the town limits, and a State of Virginia license will not supersede the municipal license, according to Matthews.

Those who need a business license but do not currently have one can obtain an application at the Town Hall or print an application at www.kenbridgeva.net and bring the completed application to the town office or mail it with payment. Notices of renewal are mailed in January and require the business owner to report gross revenue in the Town of Kenbridge. Matthews said tax is figured on the type of work or business and that is the amount to obtain the permit.

“The process is very simple and we are glad to help with any questions,” Matthews said. “The tough part is when you need to use the penalty of $300 per day, per occurrence as a means with which to convince the business owner.  This is a steep price to pay, especially when most annual  licenses are well below the one day penalty to operate in the Town.  When faced with the penalty, generally the math is easy to figure.”

Matthews further encouraged anyone with questions to call the Kenbridge Town Office at 434-676-2452.
