Now that we’re moving through March, it’s time to highlight some more Eagle Award winners from Lunenburg County Public Schools. This has been a positive year for students and staff. The district’s test results are up, schools are accredited and both individual classes and the district overall has earned multiple awards from a variety of areas. But district officials wanted to make sure everyone gets the recognition they deserve. That’s why they came up with the LCPS Eagle Awards.

It’s designed to honor the outstanding contributions of staff and students who embody the spirit of this year’s theme for the district, “Soaring Together.” So how does this work? Back in November, district officials started honoring people in four categories. That includes administrators, certified employees (teachers, counselors, psychologists, social workers), classified employee (support staff, secretaries, bus drivers, custodians, cafeteria workers) and students. Students and staff can nominate people, but so can members of the Lunenburg County community.

This month’s awards were given out last week, at the School Board meeting held on Monday, March 10. For this group, recipients were honored in four categories, including Administrator, Certified Employee, Classified Employee, and Student.

Looking at the latest Eagle Awards

We start off this month with the honored administrator, Karen McGrath. You’ve seen her name pop up for several articles over the last few years, as we spotlight projects done by her students and partnerships she set up with businesses and other organizations. McGrath serves as CTE (Career Technical Education) coordinator for Lunenburg County Public Schools.

Her co-workers and students recognized her for “exceptional patience, kindness, and unwavering commitment to supporting all students and CTE teachers. Her dedication ensures that every resource is accessible to those who need it, and she consistently goes above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of students.”

Scott Wilson was also honored this month, recognized in the Certified Employee category. In the submission, Wilson is praised “for his consistent preparation, well-planned lessons, and in-depth explanations. His ability to provide multiple examples and work tirelessly to help students excel is an inspiration to all.”

Honored in the Classified Employee category this month is Wanda Morrison. Known as the “go-to” person at Kenbridge Elementary, she is being honored “for her unwavering commitment to students, staff, and families. Her passion for her work and her extraordinary efforts to support those around her have earned her well-deserved recognition.”

And finally this month, in the student category, the Eagle Award goes to Kevyn Bautista-Escobar. His classmates and teachers wrote that he deserved the award for “his exemplary work ethic, responsibility, and kindness. A quiet leader, Kevyn consistently demonstrates politeness, talent, and accountability, earning respect from both students and staff without seeking attention.”

Applauding the work

District staff applauded the work of each award winner, saying they were fortunate to have them in Lunenburg County.

“We are incredibly proud of these outstanding individuals who embody the values of dedication, kindness, and excellence,” the district staff said in a statement. “Their contributions make our schools and community stronger, and we are fortunate to have them as part of our Lunenburg County Public Schools family.”
