Lunenburg United Futbol Club (LUFC) is gearing up to kick off another spring season. Matchdays for the youth soccer league begin March 29 and will be every Saturday through the season. The Spring LUFC Tournament will be held in South Hill May 17-18.
Matches will be played at the 5-acre Kenbridge Soccer Complex with practices being held at the Kenbridge Town Park.
“We have several new coaches and some great sponsors like Benchmark Community Bank who just paid for 270’ chain link fence and a full-length mesh banner that we can’t wait to show off,” said LUFC organizer Lee Smyth. “The fence gives us a much-needed boundary between the field and the parking lot.”
Smyth said Dominion Energy installed 10 light poles this past summer so the league can host night events. The LUFC was also recently awarded a grant from Dominion to put toward future lighting projects.
The league features kids ranging from kindergarten to ninth grade. For the spring campaign, there will be one Under-6 team, three Under-8 teams, three Under-10 teams, two Under-12 teams and one Under-15 team.
Now in its fifth year, the LUFC maintains an all-season schedule, offering Fall and Spring rec play, a Winter indoor academy and several tournaments throughout the cycle. Smyth said the club has a certified trainer (Valerie Downing) who aids in player and manager development as well.
Smyth, who has been with the organization since 2020, said it’s been rewarding to watch the program develop and see the youth league products rising through the local ranks and he is eager to see more of that this spring.
“I’ve been watching a lot of these kids play for years, Smyth shared. “We are preparing them to compete at a higher level. You’re starting to see it at Lunenburg Middle School and Central High School.”
