When Lunenburg County officials started working on the new comprehensive plan, they noticed something was missing when it comes to District 1.
“We noticed even though the board (of supervisors) had approved a new polling place for District 1, the Plymouth District, it never officially got into our county codebook,” Lunenburg County Attorney Frank Rennie said. He was speaking to the board of supervisors during a public hearing on the issue Thursday, April 10.
To sum up the issue, as Plymouth District voters are well aware, that polling place was changed two years ago from the Victoria Fire and Rescue building to the Victoria-Lunenburg Community Center, located at 1421 6th Street in Victoria. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the county made temporary adjustments to accommodate safety concerns, shifting voting to the larger Community Center. In March 2022, a public hearing was held to approve a permanent update to the polling location. But the records just didn’t keep up with what was happening at the polls. As Lunenburg County emerged from the pandemic, the ordinance had been put on hold, while the county staff sorted through requirements for polling places and election law. As it stands now, it’s not enough to just have residents going to the location.
“We need to have a resolution saying there’s a change in the voting place,” Rennie explained.
And so that’s what happened on April 10. By unanimous vote, the Lunenburg County board of supervisors approved an official resolution detailing the switch.
Nothing actually changes. For Plymouth District voters, you’ll just keep going to the same polling place as normal, both for the June primaries and then for the general election coming this fall.
What if I have questions?
Now this goes beyond just talking about Plymouth District. For voters who may be unsure of their district or polling place, you have a couple of options. First, you can go to the Virginia Department of Elections website at elections.virginia.gov or call the Lunenburg County registrar’s office, which you can reach at 434-696-3071. Staff are available to help residents verify their information, check their polling locations, or update their addresses if needed.
