The way Megan Bagley describes it, her bakery is a return to comforting flavors and simpler times, with a tiny side of fancy. This is The Farmwife’s Kitchen, a microbakery operating in and around Victoria. Think fresh baked bread, cakes decorated and ready to go, oh and cookies warm from the oven.

Bagley said she started baking cakes during her teenage years. Over time, she got out of the habit, but then decided to start it back up last year. Starting last spring, Bagley began visiting the Kenbridge Farmers Market and others in the area, selling her baked goods and getting encouragement from both the support and satisfied customers. And so, she turned that hobby into a business, opening The Farmwife’s Kitchen earlier this year. This isn’t a case where you go and peer through a storefront to see what’s baking, at least not yet.

“I currently do in-home baking with the dream of opening a store-front in the future,” Bagley said. “I ended up in Victoria when I got married. I married the local farm boy. (Which is how the bakery got its name.) His heart is tied to Victoria and mine is tied to him.”

Options on the table

A variety of delicious treats are available from The Farmwife’s Kitchen. Iced Shortbread Cookies and Cake Bites are the true “OGs” here. Custom cakes were recently added to the menu.

Sweet and savory breads like focaccia are also popular at farmers markets and places in the area. Megan recently added a new flavor – Pizza Bread. This joins the current line up of Chocolate Chip, Lemon Blueberry, Cinnamon & Honey, Lavender & Honey, Fried Pickle, Italian Herb & Cheese, and Plain.

Macarons are Bagley’s favorite item to bake.

“They are a labor of love, but so worth it,” she said. “Macarons are a beloved treat and are pretty hard to find around so it’s been extremely fun getting to bring them to rural Virginia.”

The Farmwife’s Kitchen may be new but locals already have their favorites chosen.

“Currently, my most popular products are the iced shortbread cookies and macarons. The shortbread are just a good classic cookie but are decorated to match any theme or idea,” Bagley added. “The macarons are just a fun delectable cookie with endless flavors to choose from, so you never get bored.”

Farmwife’s Kitchen a ‘means of showing my heart’

When asked to describe what baking means to her, Bagley said it was “a means of showing my heart to those around me. It’s also a means to help my family and to show my babies that they can do anything they dream of. And that they have the ability to make people happy with whatever talents they have. I love getting to bless others and help them make their party, wedding, or just every day a little bit sweeter.”

Whether you’re craving decadent desserts, or small-batch breads, The Farmwife’s Kitchen is ready to welcome you home, one bite at a time.

Megan lives in Victoria with her husband, Wade and their two children. You can reach The Farmwife’s Kitchen through its Facebook page or by calling (434) 265-0348.
