There are two seats coming open on the Lunenburg County school board this year. The first candidate to file for the District 7 spot was Cheryl Compton Berumen-Rivas. And with nobody else making the deadline to file and get on the ballot, it would seem like that is a one-person race. But that’s not the case at all.

Brinda Fowlkes has announced her plans to run as a write-in.

“I want to thank the citizens of Lunenburg County, especially those in District 7 who signed my petition to appear in the ballot for the School Board position,” Fowlkes said. “While I was unable to have my name on the ballot, I’m grateful to the Registrar’s office for their support during my first formal run for an office.”

Fowlkes said her commitment to the continued improvement of Lunenburg County Public Schools remains strong. That’s why she’s running for the District 7 seat.

“I believe strong schools make a strong community,” she added.

LOOKING AT HER BACKGROUND

Going over Fowlkes’ information, she holds a bachelor’s degree from Longwood University, a master’s from Virginia Commonwealth and certificates in Substance Abuse Treatment and in Christian Education. She also has more than 40 years of social work experience in related areas, including adoptions, foster care, home health care, behavioral health, intellectual disabilities and mental health.

Fowlkes has served for more than 30 years as a director of clinical social work, a licensed clinical social worker, an instructor for Southside Community College and Longwood University, a former field instructor for Virginia Commonwealth University and as a former board member for the Lunenburg County Medical Center.

Currently retired, Fowlkes asked residents to consider writing her in.

“I would appreciate all District 7 registered voters to vote for me on November 4, 2025, by filling in the bubble and writing Brinda H Fowlkes in the blank on the ballot for School Board in District 7,” Fowlkes said.

This is one of two school board races on the November ballot. The District 1 seat is also up this year, with a race between Angela Hurtt Freeman and Aubrey “Tony” Craven. Mr. Craven is the incumbent in that one.
