Central High School’s junior varsity (JV) football team returned only five players this year, but its young, inexperienced roster developed and helped the team finish with a 4-5 record.
Chargers Head Coach Mike McGrath said that “4-5 is a pretty good year for a team who endured three lost starters and had nine kids who had never played football before.”
The season ended Thursday as Central fell 34-18 to host Amelia (6-1).
“We gave Amelia a good game at their place and scored more than anyone else had all season against them,” McGrath said.
For their four wins, the Chargers shut out visiting Prince Edward 34-0 on Oct. 12, edged visiting Randolph-Henry 14-8 on Oct. 5, blew out host Cumberland 50-24 on Sept. 21 and defeated Buckingham by forfeit.
McGrath said he thinks the best game his team has played this season was against the Prince Edward Eagles.
“They had the physical advantage over us, but our kids played as a team, and our game plan was executed perfectly,” he said.
