Students from Kenbridge Elementary School (KES) and Victoria Elementary School (VES) used their math skills outside the classroom during a Family Math Night event, which took place at the Victoria Food Lion on Nov. 28.

With clipboards and pencils in hand, students roamed through the store, counting the items they saw on the shelves.

Teachers from VES and KES accompanied the students.

Representatives of Lunenburg County Public Schools (LCPS) estimate that more than 150 students, teachers, parents and family members came out for the event.

LCPS representatives cited in a social media post that Food Lion provided activities, snacks and prizes for the students and teachers.

MeriPage Spencer, with LCPS, said in a statement that this was the first Family Math Night of its kind that the two schools have held.

“Food Lion graciously opened its doors to Lunenburg County Public Schools and hosted our first-ever Family Math Night for our two elementary schools,” Spencer said in the statement. “Approximately 170 VES and KES students and family members attended this awesome event. Food Lion provided snacks, door prizes and grade-level math activities for students to do with their families.”

Spencer thanked the store for providing a unique and fun platform for students to brush up on their math skills.

“Food Lion also provided door prizes for our teachers,” Spencer said. “Thank you to Food Lion for their hospitality and generosity.”
