Members of the Lunenburg Board of Supervisors voted unanimously for the county and Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to abandon a 0.19-stretch of road off of Route 770 last Thursday.

County Administrator Tracy Gee, during the meeting, said the road, called Landfill Road, “Proposed abandonment will begin at Route 659 at Old Mansion Road to .19 miles south of Route 659,” Gee said. “It’s going to run into the landfill.”

No one from the public spoke during the public hearing concerning the road.

A representative from VDOT was unable to attend the meeting. Gee cited that mandatory training that day had conflicted with the board meeting.

VDOT representative Todd Cage, in a previous Dispatch report, cited that issues relating to road maintenance and a county landfill being located on the right of way at the road have contributed to a discussion and hearing of potentially abandoning the road.

The landowner of the road, Container First Services (CFS), would be in charge of maintaining the road.

Gee said the road is no longer used by the public.

“This matter is being considered due to the segment of road consisting of .19 miles currently serving no public necessity,” Gee said.

She also noted that the segment would also no longer be considered part of the VDOT’s secondary system of state highway.

“Abandoning this just takes it out of VDOT’s maintenance and puts it into the hands of CFS,” Gee said.
