Vanessa Smyth with Smyth Properties, based in Victoria, gave an update on the apartment project in Kenbridge, which included the layout of the apartments. Smyth also said the homes should be ready for occupants in June.

Willow Oak Living, which will be designed for those 55 years or older, is located at the site of the former Budget Inn Motel on 519 Main St. in Kenbridge. The proposal to rezone the property from a general business to residential property was voted for approval by the Kenbridge Town Council in July 2017. Construction on the apartments began in February.

Repurposing the building is the task of Warfield based builder F. W. Howerton.

Smyth said the site will have 10 total units.

All units ADA compliant (wheelchair accessible),” Smyth said in an email. “We intend to follow HOPA (Housing for Older People) regulations, meaning 80 percent of the units must be occupied by at least one person 55 years of age or older.”

Smyth said the complex will also have four efficiencies that will include one bed, one full bathroom area, a microwave and mini-fridge. She said two will be built to accommodate tenants for extended stay for more than a month and two will be built for short term stays.

Smyth noted that the home on the property, which has three bedrooms and two bathrooms, will also be available for rent.

“Each of these units, specifically the five apartments, are scheduled to be completed and ready for occupancy around June,” Smyth said. “We are currently accepting applications for those who are interested, keeping in mind the 55-plus regulation.”

Smyth said construction is well underway at the community, the contractor being R.F. Howerton based in Warfield.

“The contractors have poured the concrete footer, and they are currently finishing up the new roof for each building on the property,” Smyth said. “They are now working to frame the exterior (front) wall which will replace the old exterior front wall and extend the front of the apartment units (plus/minus) 6 feet. Finally, they have installed each of the bathroom showers/tub in the units.”
