Central High School’s varsity girls basketball team struggled in its final outings of the regular season last week, but the Lady Chargers will get another opportunity next week in the Region 1B tournament.
Holding the fifth seed, they will visit No. 4 Rappahannock County High School on Tuesday in a first-round playoff game tentatively set for 7 p.m.
Lady Chargers Head Coach Scott Wilson said that entering this game, the focus for him and his team “is solid defense, running the offense correctly and taking good shots.”
Concluding Central’s regular season were a pair of challenging road contests. The team lost 55-17 to Nottoway High School on Feb. 5 and fell 47-19 to Cumberland County High School on Feb. 6.
The Lady Chargers hold an overall record of 4-14.
With the announcement of the 2018-19 All-James River District accolades came recognition for Central sophomore forward Aaliyah Alexander, who made the all-district second team, her first district honor in basketball.
“I am very happy for her,” Wilson said. “She is a hardworking and very dedicated player … very easy to teach and coach. … I am pleased that the other coaches in the district helped select her to the all-district team.”
For the season, Alexander averaged 5.8 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.2 steals and 1.3 assists per game.
