Central High School’s junior varsity (JV) softball team has made good use of the 2019 season, developing skills on both offense and defense.
“The girls have improved in the field as well as improved with their hitting,” Lady Chargers Head Coach Adrianna Harris said. “The girls have worked hard and have put forth great effort into their season, and it has shown in their effort in the games.”
Their James River District record entering Thursday’s 5 p.m. home game against Amelia County High School is 4-7.
This season, the Central team is composed of three sophomores, eight freshmen and one eighth-grader.
Leading the Lady Chargers in the circle is sophomore pitcher Cameron Lewis.
“Cameron Lewis has been our strong pitcher for us this year,” Harris said. “She has worked hard throughout this season.”
Central benefits from a variety of standout players on defense.
“Emily Dolchan has been a clutch shortstop for us this year,” the coach said. “Caroline Hanks was moved from third to second in the middle of the season and has stepped up greatly for us with some very clutch outs. Alyssa Rinaldo was put as catcher this year and has learned and grown. She has been a very key player to a new position.”
Harris said eighth-grade third baseman Andrea Hoover, freshman outfielder Kynzie Nowlin and freshman outfielder/pitcher Chelsey Williams have made great plays at each of their positions as well.
“Offensively, Andrea Hoover, Cameron Lewis, Caroline Hanks and Kynzie Nowlin have all come in strong with great hits at key moments in games that have lead to many RBIs for their team,” Harris said.
Three games remain on the regular season schedule for Central.
“Our goals are to continue to play our game and be as consistent as we can in the field and while batting,” the coach said. “As always, I want the girls to have fun and give every game their best effort.”
