The High Bridge Strutters Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) recently hosted its 12th annual Hunting Heritage Banquet in Farmville with more than 400 people in attendance. Each year the chapter selects a local child — a banquet buddy — who has been diagnosed with an illness and raises funds to help cover medical expenses and other costs the family may endure. This year’s recipient was Madison Martin, a 9-year-old from Lunenburg County who was diagnosed with Germinoma, a type of tumor. Madison is the big sister to Lucas, age 6 and sassy, softball star of Roxanne and Adam Martin. Roxanne is a program assistant at Longwood University, and Adam is a sergeant with the Lunenburg County Sheriff’s Office. The NWTF presented a check for $38,000 to the Martin family to help the family with costs they have accrued since their journey began last year.
