A dispute about fees related to a conditional use permit application for a cellular tower have resulted in a postponement of two hearings related to the project, according to officials during the July 11 Lunenburg Board of Supervisors meeting.

The hearing was initially scheduled for July 16 during the regular Lunenburg Planning Commission meeting.

County Attorney Frank Rennie said that the application included a reduced base fee of $2,500, which was initially $5,000, and a fee of $8,500 to a consulting company in North Carolina, which the county hires.

Rennie said the applicant did not include payment with the application and disputed the amount that was supposed to be paid for the permit.

“We told them that the county would not take any action,” Rennie said, adding the county would not take action until the applicant pays the charges.

One public hearing regards a conditional use permit to construct a communications tower located east of Plank Road in the Love’s Mill area of Lunenburg County. The other public hearing would review the conditional use permit and the “general or approximate location character and extent of each feature” to determine whether it conforms with the Code of Virginia and the Lunenburg/Kenbridge/ Victoria comprehensive plan.

The tower, according to the public hearing notice, would be situated on a site 100 feet by 100 feet and located on a tract of 294.71 acres of land.

The conditional use applicant is Cellco Partnership, doing business as (DBA) Verizon Wireless. The tract of land is owned by Cherry Wattsboro, LLC.

A spokesman for Verizon said Monday following an inquiry by The Dispatch that he was looking into the matter.

“We remain interested in making investments in our network locally that will benefit consumers, businesses and first responders,” spokesman David Weissmann said in a statement.
