The William Taylor Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recently hosted high school seniors who had been selected by their respective schools for recognition as the school’s “DAR Good Citizen” for the 2019-2020 academic year.
The DAR Good Citizens Award, created in 1934, is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship.
This award recognizes and rewards individuals who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism in their homes, schools, and communities. These students are selected by their teachers and peers because they demonstrate these qualities to an outstanding degree. Once a student is chosen as the DAR Good Citizen, the student is invited to participate in the scholarship portion of the program by submission of an essay.
At the February DAR meeting, each student read his/her essay. Each was then presented with a certificate, pin and check. Participating schools from which the students hail represent the Southside Virginia counties that are served by the local William Taylor Chapter.
