The idea was twofold. First, local and state lawmakers could take a tour of Lunenburg County schools, to see what projects are happening. And second, that would give students the opportunity to interact with some of these lawmakers, whose positions they study about in classes. 

That concept became “Take Your Legislator to School Day”, held on Thursday, Nov. 30 across the district. 

“A number of our legislators and county officials had the opportunity to visit our schools to see some of the great things we have going on in our buildings,” said Lunenburg superintendent Dr. Sharon Stanislas. “They were also able to interact with students and staff.” 

The touring group included Virginia Del. Tommy Wright, Lunenburg Board of Supervisors members Alvester Edmonds, Edward Pennington and Mike Hankins, along with newly-elected member Greg Currin who takes office in January. Also on hand were County Administrator Tracy Gee; Chairperson of the School Board Melanie Currin and School Board Member Ruby Ingram.

The group visited several classrooms at Lunenburg Middle School led by students Shelby G. and Kyra E. The group was able to engage with students who were building robots and to see a discussion regarding water conservation in one of the science classes. They also visited a math classroom where students worked in small groups. 

At Central High School, the group enjoyed a student-led presentation regarding the school’s Career and Technical Education program, highlighting the service learning project with Lunenburg Animal Shelter and the school’s new School-Based Enterprise, Central Spa & Grooming (serving pets of school employees). 

At Victoria Elementary, the group saw a sampling of projects being done by various grade levels and learned about the Junior Librarian program. They even had the opportunity to solve multiplication problems using Lattice Math after a brief lesson given by fourth-grade students. 

At Kenbridge Elementary, the group was led on a tour by the Student Council. The group saw many projects displayed throughout the school including shoebox book reports and other artwork.
