Virginia’s current 5th District Congressman will take a new seat in January. Rep. Bob Good was chosen on Monday, Dec. 11 by the House Freedom Caucus to serve as its next chairman. Good succeeds current Chairman Scott Perry, beginning in January 2024.
Good has been a member of the caucus since taking office in 2021, serving on the group’s Board of Directors as Whip and championing the positions and messages of the caucus.
“It is my privilege and honor to serve as the next House Freedom Caucus chairman,” said Good. “I thank Rep. Perry for his outstanding leadership of the caucus, and I look forward to building on the work he has done and continuing the fight to reduce government spending, secure our borders, and defend our constitutional freedoms.”
WHAT IS THE FREEDOM CAUCUS?
First off, what is a congressional caucus, you ask.
A caucus is a group of representatives in the U.S. House that comes together in pursuit of a shared goal. The Freedom Caucus mentioned here is a group of Republican members in the U.S. House, typically considered the most conservative in the House Republican Conference.
It’s also fairly new, so to speak. The caucus was created in January 2015 by a group of conservatives and Tea Party movement members. Its first chairperson, Jim Jordan, described the caucus as a “smaller, more cohesive, more agile and more active” group of conservative representatives.
