James Russell “Russ” Mattox, 49 of Roanoke, formerly of Victoria, went to be with the Lord on April 18. He was preceded in death by his son’s mother, Jennifer Porter Mattox.
He is survived by his son, Garrett Ronald Mattox; his parents, Ronald and Anita Mattox; his brothers, Jason (Jennifer) and Joey (Stephanie); aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Russ grew up in Victoria and graduated from Central High School in 1993. He attended Southside Virginia Community College. As a teenager, he worked for Timmy’s Grocery, Wright’s Superette and Vaughan’s Grocery to name a few. His favorite job was watering the greens with his grandfather at Victoria Golf Club. He also enjoyed volunteering at Victoria Fire & Rescue. He was most recently employed by Metro Health EMS in Roanoke. His greatest pleasure was spending time at Smith Mountain Lake. He enjoyed his three spoiled cats and dog, Rico. He was most proud of his son, Garrett. Russ will always be remembered for his great storytelling ability and his friendly smile.
