Hampden-Sydney College, currently ranked 21st in the nation, posted a final round of 301 on Tuesday for a 54-hole team score of 896 (305-290-301) to finish second among 11 teams at the 2024 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Men’s Golf Championships. The event was played over several days at The Green Course at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg. Junior Nick Rubino led the Tigers with his 78-71-74- -223 that tied for sixth individually among the 55 conference golfers. 

Rubino, who was announced as a member of the All-ODAC First Team during the awards ceremony, had two birdies and 13 pars during his final round on the par 72, 6,981-yard layout. He was followed by freshman Jack Barnes (73-73-80- -226, 11th), junior Rece Lott (78-72-77–227, T-12th), senior Tommy Bishop (80-74-74–228, T-15th), along with junior John Hutcheson (76-77- 76–229, T-17th). Barnes, who was announced as a member of the All-ODAC Third Team, posted three birdies and eight pars on Tuesday after entering the final round just one shot off the lead. Lott had two birdies and 12 pars. Bishop, who was announced as the conference’s Ted Keller Sportsman of the Year, had four birdies and nine pars. Hutcheson had two birdies and 10 pars during his third round. Rubino and Bishop tied for the sixth-best individual round on day three of the tournament with their respective efforts of two-over par 74. 

Rubino also tied for first among the tournament field in par 5 scoring (4.58, -5), tied for seventh in both birdies (8) and pars (34), and tied for ninth in par 3 scoring (3.17, +2). Barnes tied for first among the tournament field in par 5 scoring (4.58, -5), as well, and was sixth in pars (35) and tied for 18th in birdies (7). Lott tied for sixth in par 4 scoring (4.13, +4), tied for seventh in pars (34), tied for 18th in birdies (7) and tied for 20th in par 5 scoring (5.17, +2). Bishop tied for fourth in birdies (9), was 12th in par 4 scoring (4.20, +6), tied for 19th in par 3 scoring (3.33, +4) and tied for 20th in par 5 scoring (5.17, +2). Hutcheson tied for second in par 4 scoring (4.07, +2), tied for seventh in pars (34) and tied for 13th in par 3 scoring (3.25, +3). 

The highly-competitive championship tournament field featured five teams ranked among the Top 25 nationally in the latest Division III Men’s Golf rankings, including the No. 21 Tigers. No. 7 University of Lynchburg won the event with its 297-293-291–881, followed by the Garnet & Grey (896), No. 8 Washington and Lee University (899), No. 15 Guilford (NC) College (907) and No. 20 Averett University (912) among the Top Five. James Alden of GC took individual medalist honors at one-over par 72-73-72–217.

H-SC will now wait for the NCAA Selection Show on Monday, May 6, for a possible team or individual at-large invitation to the 2024 Division III Men’s Golf Championships on May 14-17 at the Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nevada.
