County leaders would still like to see a cell tower erected in the Dundas community, and are even looking for grant money to pay for the construction.

Supervisor T. Wayne Hoover said at the May board of supervisors meeting that he wants to be sure the county is actively promoting the site and not just sitting back and waiting for someone to come in.

“The county is going to benefit greatly if we can get someone to build on it,” Hoover said.

He said a tower would help improve and called the area “the linchpin to the county’s handheld coverage.”

Dundas is located in eastern Lunenburg.

“That site is like a black hole that, unfortunately, public safety cannot get out of,” he said.

Consequently, the county might want to find a way to just build the tower, he said.

Beverley Hawthorne, Lunenburg’s economic and community development director, said the county makes no secret of its desire for more cell, towers in the area.

“They know that site is available and we want them to come,” she said.

Hawthorne said the county is working with Mid-Atlantic Broadband Cooperative to promote the site and let people know about its availability.

MBC is a not-for-profit cooperative created in 2003 to revitalize the regional economy of Southside and has the goal of building a cost-effective, carrier-class telecom infrastructure that would expand broadband services and opportunities in the region.

Hawthorne said that the county will make a point to do even more.

Earlier this year the board withdrew a conditional use permit from Verizon Wireless to build a 295-foot tower on Mill Pond Road after the company failed to begin construction fast enough.

Local leaders had high hopes for the project, but have also noted the continuing difficulty of attracting providers to a rural community with a small customer base.
