The William Taylor Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was recently recognized with a prestigious award, the Chapter Achievement Blue Ribbon Award, for chapters in the state of Virginia with 51-100 members. The William Taylor Chapter, with its 98 members, is the second largest of the eleven chapters in its Virginia DAR District III. The chapter, under the current leadership of Linda B. Bagley of Kenbridge, was chartered in 1955 and will celebrate its 70th birthday next year.

The Chapter Achievement Blue Ribbon Award is based upon the Chapter Regent’s report of all the chapter activities, donations and volunteer hours within the specified year’s time. The chapter is then awarded points for each category in which it has completed activities. Emphasis is placed on chapter activities which serve our current military and veterans, educational activities to help students and other individuals understand our U.S. Constitution, historical preservation of records, cemeteries, or historic buildings, donations to worthy causes, and members’ volunteer hours. The chapter is awarded points for its completed activities in each category.

One of the most significant undertakings of the William Taylor Chapter has been a three-year project of donating funds to preserve an historic court volume in each of the counties of Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottoway, and Brunswick. This project saw over $10,000 donated to preserve these four historic courthouse records. The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution is one of the largest patriotic women’s organizations in the world. Its major areas of emphasis are promotion of historic preservation, education, and patriotism.
