The Lunenburg Girls Softball Angels All-Star team defeated Crewe-Burkeville 4-2 on Monday to reach the championship game of the Dixie Youth District I Angels All-Star Tournament in Crewe.
LGS Angels Manager Jamie Buchanan said his team produced a “very gritty performance.”
The girls trailed 2-0 going into the top of the fourth inning when they rattled off four unanswered runs.
With the score 2-1, Cayley Stokes produced a three-RBI hit to give her team the lead.
“(The) girls showed a lot of heart and fight to come back from that deficit, and then the defense shut (Crewe-Burkeville) down for the next two innings,” Buchanan said.
Mackenzie Newcomb pitched all five innings of the game and had some timely strikeouts.
“The defense played well behind her, too,” Buchanan said, noting that Kennedy Moody had a great game at catcher. Lunenburg has gone 3-1 in the tournament, sustaining its only loss on Sunday against the Dinwiddie County All-Stars with a 4-0 final score.
On Saturday, the area girls faced Crewe-Burkeville for the first time and won 3-1, with some great pitching from Newcomb and some timely hits. All the runs in the game were scored in the first inning.
Lunenburg opened the tournament on Friday with a 10-0 win against the Blackstone All-Stars.
“All the girls came out hitting the ball strong,” Buchanan said about the game.
In that contest, Regan Harris, Tristan Buchanan and Allisa Inzeo contributed some key hits, and Inzeo pitched a shut-down final inning.
The championship game was set for 6 p.m. on Tuesday in Crewe.
