Departments in county government and the towns are increasingly going online.

GIS mapping and tax records from the Lunenburg County Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office are now online — and Victoria is close to posting the town’s taxes and utility bills.

The county’s website notes that the commissioner of the revenue’s office “is pleased to announce that our GIS mapping and tax records are now available” for free to the public at http://lunenburggis.timmons.com/.

Commissioner of the Revenue Liz Y. Hamlett said anyone with questions or needing assistance using the website should contact her office.

Hamlett warned, however, that while every reasonable effort has been made to assure the accuracy of these maps and associated data, Lunenburg assumes no liability arising from its use.

Indeed, she noted, there are some parcels that have long not been surveyed.

Taxpayers should be able to click on a parcel and the adjourning parcels.

“I’m just happy we could move into the 21st century with our county,” Hamlett said. “It’s definitely a big accomplishment for our office. I’m proud for our constituency and the taxpayers of Lunenburg County.”

Meanwhile, Victoria is close to having its utility bills and taxes online, Interim Town Manager Rodney Newton said.

The town could be online in October in time for this year’s tax season.

Customers will be able to look at their utility account, including usage.

The upfront cost is for web design, and there will be a monthly charge to the town to offer the service, Newton said. The fee, for credit card service and technology are still being researched. The fee will be close to the processing fee currently charged for using the credit card when making payments in person or by telephone, he said.

“We’re getting a lot of inquiries and I think it will help us with the workload in the town office,” Newton said.
