The Central High School junior varsity softball team has been proceeding this season with new leadership and while it has suffered some early losses, it has also mixed in some impressive victories.

Going into Tuesday’s road game against Cumberland High School, the Lady Chargers held a 2-3 record under the guidance of Head Coach Adrianna Caballero.

“So far this season, the Lady Chargers have impressed me with their confidence and their ability to adapt to new coaches,” Caballero said. “They have made improvements with their defensive skills as well as their offensive abilities.”

Central’s 2017 squad features seven sophomores and four freshmen.

Caballero said that in the Lady Chargers’ strong performance against visiting Amelia County High School on April 7, there were several of her players that stood out.

“Samantha Bishop, Haley Hayer, Katie Morris and Fallyn Hawks have been stepping up a great deal for their team with their bats,” she said. “In the circle we have been relying on Savannah Fowler. She has been doing a great job pitching for our team.”

Throughout the game against the Lady Raiders, “we were getting solid hits and moving around the bases,” Caballero said. “We were able to hold Amelia from scoring until the last few innings.”

In losses to Buckingham County High School and Goochland High School, Central’s offense was not lacking in potency, scored 12 and 10 runs, respectively.

Elaborating on Bishop, a sophomore, the coach said she “has been an outstanding player for the Lady Chargers. She started the season out as a strong outfielder and was very willing to move and help strengthen the left side of the infield.”

Central freshman Hannah Breedlove drew praise for outstanding defensive play at third base.

“She has made several double plays, allowing us to get out of some tight innings,” Caballero said.

As a major presence in the circle for the Lady Chargers, Fowler, a freshman, has been able to pitch multiple games a week, the coach said.

In her team’s quest for success this season, Caballero indicated the priorities will be continuing to play together and using everyone’s strengths.

The Lady Chargers visited Cumberland on Tuesday, and they will visit Randolph-Henry High School on Thursday with the first pitch to be thrown at 5 p.m.
