The Maple Grove Townhouse Apartments at East 5th Avenue and North Maple Street in Kenbridge are nearing completion.

According to Steve Israel, one of the project developers, the apartments that are part of phase one are about 98 percent finished.

“We’ve got a unit ready to move in and one that’s about a week away and one left after that,” Israel said.

He said an open house held Saturday was “fairly” successful, noting 7-10 people attended after seeing an ad in The Dispatch.

Israel and his wife retired to Kenbridge in 2006. He began his building career in 1978 in central Florida as a trim carpenter, then became a construction supervisor for a luxury builder before starting his own company in 1982.

Israel started his own construction company, 2 Star Builders LLC, in 2012.

The firm has built the townhouse apartments working with Cardinal Homes.

Apartments in the first phase consists of four two-story townhouse units with two upstairs bedrooms — each with its own bathroom — and a complete laundry.

The ground floor of the apartments includes a full kitchen with stainless steel appliances and granite countertops, a dining area, living room and back porch.

The town previously rezoned the property the apartments sit on from single-family to multi-family for the project and worked out details for Maple Grove LLC to install a new 6-inch water line on North Maple Street to serve the complex.

The apartment complex was prompted after developers saw two major projects residents hope will enhance the region and make it more attractive.

Maple Grove is intended “to capture a new market of folks moving to the Kenbridge area, who want newer and more updated rental properties,” Israel said. “Other potential residents might be those Lunenburg young people who want to return to the area after college, to enjoy and build our community.”
