A two-alarm blaze destroyed a home at 694 Nutbush Road near Victoria on Sunday evening.

Crews from Victoria and Meherrin responded to the scene at 4:45 p.m., according to Rodney Newton, chief of the Victoria Fire Department and Rescue Squad.

The family was displaced, Newton said.

“The cause is unknown, but we’re pretty sure it started on the deck on the front of the house then spread into the trailer,” Newton said of the fire.

“The fire damage itself was right inside the door into the living room area, but it was probably 80 percent of the trailer was damaged by heat and smoke.”

Newton said the house was uninhabitable. “They couldn’t stay there. The Red Cross was contacted to assist the family,” he said.

He didn’t believe the fire to be suspicious in nature. “Nothing stood out that it was,” Newton said.

He said volunteers were on scene for about an hour and a half.

“The one family pet — a cat — did die in the fire. But we were able to save three kittens,” Newton added.

“Check your batteries,” Newton said of smoke detectors in homes and businesses. “Make sure you’ve got plenty smoke detectors.”

No one was injured in the fire, he said.
