Let them answer your questions

Organizers of a forum for Republican gubernatorial candidates seeking to appear on the ballot in November are working feverishly to make the much-needed program a great success.

One way we can help organizers is by submitting questions for the candidates to answer.

“This is your chance to make an impact on how our state will be run for the next four years,” said Mike Hankins, the head of the county’s Republican Party, in reference to the questions sought for the forum.

I agree with Mike. This is our chance to get answers to important questions regarding the economy and jobs, health care, education, taxes and other topics that directly impact the way we live and conduct our lives.

During the event, which will be held Thursday, April 6 from 6:30-9 p.m. at the Kenbridge Community Center on Fifth Avenue, a group of pastors will present questions selected from what’s submitted to the men seeking their party’s nod.

Organizers are making it easier than ever for voters, taxpayers and residents of this area to participate in democracy.

“People in Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottoway, Brunswick, Charlotte and Amelia counties are being (asked) to submit questions for the forum that the candidates will answer that night on stage in Kenbridge. Your question can be e-mailed to mike.hankins0060@gmail.com or mailed to 308 E. Fourth Ave., Kenbridge, VA 23944. The deadline for the questions has been extended to (Friday),” he told The Dispatch in an email.

One of my favorite quotes about government is “Democracy is not a spectator sport.” In order for our government to work like it’s supposed to, we’ve got to be involved, whether it’s voting, writing our elected officials, attending public hearings or staying in touch with members of our boards of supervisors.

According to Hankins, a committee of local ministers will select 30-35 questions that will be asked during the event. “The questions will not be given to the candidates in advance. A packet with all the questions will be given to the candidates after the event so that candidate can respond to your question personally. Include your name and address if you would like a person response.”

I thank Hankins and the county’s Republican Party for offering those who live in Southside such a wonderful opportunity to become involved in the democratic process.
