The Town of Kenbridge announced that Mike McGrath was appointed to serve on its town council at the council’s March meeting.
He will be serving in the seat formerly held by Daniel G. Thompson.
This will be McGrath’s third time serving on the council.
“I had served in previous years, on and off,” he said.
Ordinarily, McGrath would have a schedule that would make public service difficult.
At Central High School, he teaches history, is head coach of the varsity boys basketball team in the winter, head coach of the junior varsity football team in the fall and assistant coach of the track and field team in the spring. He also assists student-athletes with offseason sports training and is involved with the athletic booster club.
But the effort to limit the spread of COVID-19 has led to a shutdown of schools in the state for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year, drastically changing McGrath’s schedule.
“The mayor called and asked if I could fill in on council,” he said. “So I thought I had the time to do so for now.”
What he hopes to do as a third-time member of the Kenbridge Town Council is simple.
“Just to serve the community for a short amount of time,” he said. “I am not sure I will seek to be elected due to my time constraints as a coach at Central.”
