The building at 11512 Courthouse Road is closed for the next two weeks, as repairs take place inside. That doesn’t mean the county offices inside are shut down, however. They’ve just been relocated. That includes both the Lunenburg County Treasurer and the Lunenburg County Commissioner of the Revenue. County officials say aside from being relocated, things will otherwise remain like normal.
“Neither office has closed and will continue to provide services to taxpayers during repairs,” said the Lunenburg County Administration Office through a statement to The Dispatch.
But the question for several residents and the one we’ve been asked is what happened. Why are repairs needed on the building in the first place? According to Lunenburg County officials, the answer dates back to February. That was when the main water heater for the building at 11512 Courthouse Road failed over a weekend when no staff were on site. As a result, continuous water flow over an extended period caused damage through much of the area. Now the water heater has been replaced and the building was quickly cleaned up, but County officials delayed additional repairs when it was discovered a separate issue was allowing water to enter the back offices of the building.
County staff members said several unsuccessful attempts were made to repair the issue at the back offices before a structural expert was brought in to determine the cause of the water encroaching on the building. Updates have since been made to the exterior of the building to ensure water now flows away from the foundation, making way for the rest of the repairs to get started.
Lunenburg County repairs and relocation
So that’s where we are now. Those additional repairs are to first replace material damaged by the water, with repairs for the building done “as needed”. Lunenburg County’s insurance provider estimates the cost of repairs to be $34,226.
During the closure, the Treasurer’s Office will be working in the Historic Courthouse. That’s located just up the road from the original site, at 11409 Courthouse Road and you can access it by the accessibility door entrance on the side of the Historic Courthouse facing the County Administration Office. The Treasurer’s Office will hold hours for the public from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Commissioner of Revenue’s staff, meanwhile, will be working remotely during the repairs.
“We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding as we make improvements to the facilities” the County Administration said in its statement to the Dispatch. “We intend to reopen both offices under normal operations as quickly as possible. Please contact the County Administration Office at 434-696-2142 with any concerns or questions.”
