The Richard Speights Memorial Golf Benefit will both raise funds for the Lunenburg County Ministries (LCM) organization’s services and honor the memory of Richard Speights, a longtime member of the Lunenburg community.

The benefit will take place Wednesday, April 25, 1 p.m. at Victoria Golf Club.

Tournament Coordinator Chris Craft said those interested in taking part in the benefit can sign up for a foursome, or a type of golf match made up of sets of teams that consist of two golfers who alternate between hitting the golf ball.

Craft said there is room to host 16 teams.

He said the golf tournament fundraiser began about four years ago, but that it only has been dedicated to Speights approximately two years.

“They do not get any type of support financially from grants, from the state, or money from the towns or the county,” Craft said. “They strictly survive on donations to pay the electric bill and pay the rent on their facility in Kenbridge.”

Speights, Craft said, was “a minister. He was a used car salesman. He loved his family and he loved God. He was just an all-around, genuine good guy.” Speights died in February 2017. Speights served on the board of directors with the LCM.

Craft said raffle prizes from area organizations would also be available during the benefit. He said the LCM, which has an office in Kenbridge, provides a clothes and food pantry, and organizes a meal for people in the community once a month. He credits volunteers from area churches for the number of people the organization has reached, and he said seeing the impact of the LCM inspired Craft to organize the golf benefit.
