Republican presidential candidate and national frontrunner Donald Trump easily carried Lunenburg County in the Republican Primary held Tuesday, leading eight other challengers.

Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, the party’s frontrunner nationally, handily defeated her two opponents. Clinton won with 83 percent, or 736 votes, in Lunenburg County’s Democratic Primary, while Trump took 49 percent, or 642 votes, in the GOP primary.

Marco Rubio came in second to Trump with 293 votes in Lunenburg, while Bernie Sanders trailed Clinton with 141 votes.

The Associated Press declared Clinton the statewide winner of Virginia’s Democratic Primary. The Republican Primary was still too close to call at presstime, with Trump just ahead of Rubio statewide.

The results are according to unofficial results reported by the state Department of Elections’ website.

Just over 1,300 people voted Tuesday in the county.
