The Lunenburg County Chamber of Commerce — already busily organizing a bluegrass concert in May — has now also decided to hold a talent show featuring local school children.

Tickets for the concert will go on sale Thursday, April 14, and the 80 posters advertising it will be distributed around the community, said Mel Payne, the chamber’s president. The concert will feature the Little Roy and Lizzy Show, a bluegrass, country and gospel group from Lincolnton, Ga.; and its special guest the Appalachian Express, based out of the Chase City area, Payne said. The May 14 concert will be at the Kenbridge Community Center, he said.

“Once tickets go on sale, I would advise your friends to pick up their tickets early because it’s going to be a sellout,” Payne said. “It should be a great time.”

There will only be 310 seats available for the concert.

Payne discussed the concert during the chamber’s monthly noon luncheon meeting, held Thursday at the Victoria Restaurant. CEO W. Scott Burnette, and his colleage Ken Kurz, from VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital, was the guest speaker.

Meanwhile, Payne said the chamber is working with the school system on a talent show that will involve all of the schools in the county. The show would be late this year, and in the next school year. No date has been set.

“I don’t think they’d have a hard time drawing a pretty huge crowd if it’s done correctly,” Payne said. Payne said he envisions the event “will draw a big enough crowd that Central High School is the only place big enough to handle it.”

If the program is successful, Payne said he envisions approaching other area school systems and possibly getting a competition between the systems.

The chamber has seen its membership climb from 38 when Payne took over as president in late January to 58 currently, with a goal of bringing it up to 100-120 members.
