Brandon Scott and Zakiyyah Hurt qualified for the state meet while representing Central High School at the Region 1A East Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday at Sussex Central High School.
Athletes can qualify for states by either meeting a qualifying standard in an event or by placing in the top six of that event at regionals.
Scott and Hurt both made the state cut by placement.
Hurt, a sophomore, placed fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.24 seconds.
Scott, a senior, finished sixth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17.59 seconds, and he took sixth in the 300-meter hurdles, finishing in 44.57 seconds.
Central Athletics Director Wallace Owen said he was particularly proud of both athletes, and added, “We’re hopeful that they can have a good showing in Radford this weekend,” referring to the Group 1A and 2A Virginia High School League State Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Scott was also listed among those making up the Chargers’ 4×100-meter relay team, which claimed seventh place after crossing the finish line in 46.70 seconds. The other athletes listed on the relay team included Tyler Williams, Raymond Alexander and Malik Lambert.
Taylor King finished 10th in the girls 3200-meter run with a time of 15 minutes and 53.52 seconds.
Hurt placed 11th in the 300 hurdles, finishing in 55 seconds.
The Chargers’ 4×400-meter relay team took 11th with a 4:02.51 time. Those listed as part of the team include Williams, Alexander, Ben Spencer and Brian Blaszkiewicz. Morgan Hall finished 12th in the 3200, with her time ending up at 16:14.73.
Central’s girls team placed 18th out of 20 teams at the regional meet, producing four points, which Hurt earned with her fourth-place finish in the 100 hurdles.
The Central boys team tied for last place out of 20 teams, as Scott’s two sixth-place finishes accounted for the Chargers’ two points. The boys team from Middlesex finished with 72 points to win the meet.
Scott and Hurt will compete at the Group 1A and 2A state championships, which are set for Friday and Saturday at Radford University. Events are scheduled to begin on Friday at 1 p.m. and Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
