The Lunenburg County All-Star baseball team led early and pulled away late for a 12-2 victory over the Blackstone All-Stars on Sunday afternoon during the Dixie Youth District 5 Minor League All-Star Tournament in Victoria.
It was Lunenburg’s second 10-run win in the tourney, having started its run in the event with a 13-3 victory over the Prince Edward-Farmville Youth Association All-Stars on Saturday.
Though Lunenburg scored enough to take small leads through four innings on Sunday, its offense was struggling during that time. But good defense helped spoil Blackstone’s tournament debut.
“We were making some really good plays, and the pitching held up, and they protected the lead,” Lunenburg Manager Carl Ashworth said. “So, that was it — pitching and defense got us to the time we could finally score.”
Hunter Word pitched the last four innings of the game for Lunenburg and finished with five strikeouts. Maki Tucker pitched the first two innings and threw three strikeouts.
Lunenburg’s offense exploded in the top of the sixth inning when it produced six runs.
For the game, Seth Bishop led Lunenburg with four runs batted in, while Trey Inman added three. Latrell Johnson led the team with three runs scored.
The Lunenburg All-Stars return to action in Victoria on Monday at 8 p.m., playing the undefeated Dinwiddie National All-Stars.
