Kenston Forest School’s varsity baseball team suffered a 13-1 home loss to Fuqua School on Thursday going into spring break, a result that has been uncharacteristic for the talented Kavaliers.

“We’re a whole lot better team than what we showed today,” Kenston Forest Head Coach Scotty Atkins said. “It was disappointing, but we’ve got to move on and just try to get better.”

Identifying the deciding factor of the game, he said, “I think we made a few mistakes and just got down on ourselves.”

He had expected it to be a competitive game, as the Falcons were ranked No. 6 in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) Division III state poll, and the Kavaliers were ranked No. 5.

In the latest VISAA poll that came out Monday, the Kavs fell to No. 6, but they are still in position to qualify for the state tournament, which involves the top eight teams in the division.

With his team holding a record of 8-5, Atkins said Kenston Forest’s best game so far probably came against its rival, Brunswick Academy, on April 7. The Kavs defeated the visiting Vikings 14-4.

Standouts so far for Kenston Forest, both offensively and defensively, have been senior center fielder J.E.B. Buchanan, junior shortstop Chance Whitehead and sophomore pitcher/second baseman Tyler White.

The Kavaliers will be active during spring break, traveling to Richmond to face Trinity Episcopal School on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
