Man dies in Saturday accident

A Chase City man died Saturday following a two-vehicle accident on Route 40, west of Route 635 in Lunenburg County, according to a release from Virginia State Police.
Police say the accident occurred at 1:40 a.m., and the driver, Joshua P. Smith, 32, of Chase City, died after being transported to Virginia Commonwealth University Community Memorial Health Center in South Hill.
According to the release, a 2006 Pontiac GTC was traveling through Route 40 when it crossed the centerline and struck a 2001 Ford Taurus. The Pontiac then ran off the left side of Route 40, struck a utility pole and then several trees.
Smith was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the release, and was ejected from the vehicle.
Smith was transported to Virginia Commonwealth University Community Memorial Health Center in South Hill, where he died later that morning, police say.
Virginia State Police Trooper S.C. Hudson is investigating the crash, and the cause of the accident remains under investigation.
